About 4.67 hectares of citrus fruits in a fruit tree cooperative in Huating town, Shanghai's Jiading district recently began to ripen.
The citrus fruits are called Hongmeiren, or red beauty, a hybrid citrus fruit introduced from Japan. It is popular for its beautiful appearance, rich nutrients, and delicious taste.
The fruit was first planted by the cooperative in Huating town, Jiading in 2018, and bore fruit for the first time in 2020.
"This year's fruits came to the market earlier than last year, and they're also sweeter and more attractive physically. The production is expected to reach 15,000 kilograms this year," said the manager of the cooperative.
The fruit has strict requirements in terms of temperature and humidity because it has weak roots and poor resistance to disease. Therefore, the cooperative will install sheds and equipment for the possible coming cold wave.
The fruits are currently available at the cooperative for in-person purchase and will be available online on the "Wojia Shengxian" mini program after they come to the market in mass in mid-to-late December.
