Jiading, one of the five new towns in Shanghai and an important district in boosting Shanghai's development of science and technology, is renowned for its automobile industry.
In the Shanghai Auto Museum, which records the history of Jiading's automobile industry, there are more 100 vintage cars from nearly 50 brands on display, such as the first car ever made in Jiading -- the Shanghai SH760.
In September 1958, the automaker that made the first car in Shanghai named it Phoenix, which later in 1964 was changed to Shanghai. In the following decades, car makers, such as Volkswagen, sprang up in Shanghai and the large-scale production of automobiles in China began.
Jiading has currently grown into a city known for its auto industry by integrating factories, research and development institutions, and top talents as well as by continuously upgrading and restructuring the industry.
Presently, new-energy vehicles, intelligent connected vehicles and self-driving vehicles are all promoted in Jiading. The total mileage of open roads for automatic driving in Jiading district has reached 1,117 kilometers, accounting for 62 percent of the total mileage of open roads in Shanghai.
