About the city
The city of Yao is located in the middle of Osaka prefecture, Japan, and close to the city of Osaka. Yao has developed industries and a thriving commerce sector. It covers an area of about 40 square kilometers and is the birthplace of the Kawachi ondo style of folk singing. The city is also well-known for its annual Yao Kawachi Ondo Festival.
Establishment of friendly relations
The former Jiading county established friendly relations with the city of Yao in 1981, and both sides signed the Agreement on Friendship and Cooperation Between Shanghai's Jiading County and Osaka's Yao City on Sept 13, 1986.
Jiading became a district in October 1992 before formally establishing a sister-city relationship with Yao on May 15, 1993. That same year, the district head and city mayor agreed in an exchange of letters that the agreement on friendship and cooperation signed in 1986 will be changed into the Agreement on Friendly Cities Between Shanghai's Jiading District and Osaka's Yao City, with all the provisions of the former agreement continuing to be valid.
