Shanghai has launched its first fleet of smart buses equipped with "traffic lights" in Jiading district.

These C-V2X connected buses, which feature real-time countdown timers that are in sync with traffic signals, are aimed at preventing accidents caused by obstructed views.

The project manager, Hou Lei, explained that each bus is equipped with seven terminal devices and a collaborative cloud platform. By receiving data from connected intersections, the buses display live countdown timers at their rear to alert vehicles behind them. Residents have said that they are pleased with this feature as it effectively prevents people from running red lights.

Inside the buses are two electronic screens. One provides driving assistance for the driver and reduces risks with blind spots, while the other displays real-time information about routes, station locations, estimated arrival times, and transfer details for passengers.

A total of 162 buses plying 20 routes in Jiading have been equipped with the above three intelligent screens (one on the rear and two inside the bus).

Compared to traditional buses, these connected buses have more advanced capabilities such as long-distance perception and all-around safety warnings that improve operational efficiency and passenger safety. These connected buses currently serve approximately 10,000 passengers daily.
